What is LASIK

What is LASIK?

Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis LASIK is a laser eye surgery intended to reduce a person’s dependency on his glasses or contact lenses. LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, at the front of the eye, using excimer laser. Basically, it involves lifting a superficial flap from the cornea, which is the transparent tissue in front of the colored iris and pupil. An extra-precision laser is then applied to the undersurface of the flap to modify the cornea exactly according to your degree of error. The flap is then reposited in place with no need to sutures. Applying the laser beam under the flap offers an excellent opportunity to regain comfortable good vision few hours after the procedure.

In recent years, the wavefront technology has been successfully used to the big advantage of a much better quality visual outcome in eyes with higher order aberrations. Similarly, the introduction of new technolgy microkeratomes, as well as the modern breakthrough of the use of femtosecond laser to creat the superficial flap of the cornea in the first half of the procedure (IntraLASIK), has added much to the extra precision of the LASIK operation
Dr Ahmad Khalil was one of the first users of the intralase (femto-lasik) system, when it arrived to Egypt

LAsik Surgery steps

Outside the laser room, An assistant will put an eye drop for you, after which you will be guided to the laser room where you will be asked to lie comfortably on the laser bed.

Eye drops are again applied to your eye. Dr Khalil will then insert a holder under your eyelids that will ensure your eye remains open during the procedure.

Now a flap is created in your cornea. This is done either with a mechanical device called a microkeratome or by the use of Femto-laser (Intralase). After increasing the pressure inside the eye by a special apparatus in order to make a regular beautiful flap by either the microkeratome or the femto-laser. During these 15-20 seconds, your perception of light will be dimmed significantly.

Next, Dr Khalil will ask you to fixate on a light inside the lasermachine. Then the laser light is applied and reshapes your corneal surface. In the brief period while the laser is running, you hear a buzzing sound and you may realize a smell similar to burning hair.

When the laser application is complete, Dr Khalil replaces the lasik flap in its original position, where it completely adheres.

The following mornings, you reach for your fancy glasses to put them on, but ALAS, you do not need them any more!

The success rates are astoundingly high. Patients are encouraged to have a detailed consultation with Dr Khalil prior to the day of surgery.
