Corneal Ectasia

What is Corneal Ectasia?

Corneal ectasia occurs in rare instances following laser vision correction. It occurs mostly when the cornea is not suitable enough for such laser treatment.

Thinning of a partially weak cornea leads to its protrusion, which results in disturbed vision caused by the irregular corne, much like what occurs in eyes with keratoconus.

Dr Khalil therefore stresses the importance of proper evaluation and full examination of each case before having lasik vision correction. He explains that this is the best way to avoid corneal ectasia

Treatment of corneal ectasia

corneal rings for corneal ectasia and keratoconus

At Dr Khalil Eye Clinic in Cairo, Dr Ahmad Khalil gives the best suitable treatment for each particular case of corneal ectasia.

Treatment of corneal ectasia is similar in several ways to the treatment of keratoconus. Rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses, collagen cross linking, intracorneal ring implantation can all play a good role in correcting vision in eyes with corneal ectasia. Corneal grafting or keratoplasty is resorted to in advanced cases which do not respond to other lines of treatment.
