One of the best known eye surgeons and doctors in Cairo, Egypt and the Middle East, Dr Ahmad Khalil acted as Chief of the Glaucoma Service at RIO till 2022, and he is the immediate past President of the Egyptian Society for the Glaucomas. He graduated in 1985 at Cairo University, Faculty of Medicine, recognised as the the best medical school in Egypt, the Middle East and Africa, where he got his training as an intern then as resident of Ophthalmology till 1990. Dr Khalil got his Master of Ophthalmology from Cairo University in 1989.
Dr Ahmad Khalil had the chance of getting first hand contact and training with some of the most eminent international ophthalmologist figures in various universities and best centers and hospitals around the world.
In 1990, he moved to the then newly inaugurated Research Institute of Ophthalmology, on the bank of the Nile on the Giza side of Cairo, a state of the art sub-specialized eye hospital, and one of the largest and best known Eye centers in the region.

In 1993, Dr Khalil moved to Japan for advanced clinical and research training, where he continued his clinical and research activities at Kyushu University; one of the 7 most prestigious and best universities in Japan, which used to be called Imperial Universities. During that period, he acquired the permission for advanced clinical training undersigned by the Japanese Minister of Health. He acquired his Doctoral Degree and PhD in Ophthalmology early in 1998.

On the way back to Cairo, Dr Khalil visited Doheny Eye Institute, Los Angeles (Prof Dr Narsing Rao), the Eye Section of the Children Eye Hospital of Los Angeles, University of Southern California Prof Dr Tim Stout), Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Schepens Eye Research Institute Harvard, Boston. He then returned to Cairo RIO, where he is currently working as an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology.
An ongoing international scientific activity
Dr. Ahmad Khalil is a distinguished speaker frequently invited to prominent Ophthalmology conferences worldwide. His extensive publications on glaucoma, LASIK surgery, keratoconus treatment, and cataract surgery appear in leading eye journals and books from regions including Egypt, Japan, Europe, and the USA. He has disseminated his research at numerous esteemed events globally and continues to be a sought-after speaker at various conferences.
Dr. Khalil has imparted knowledge and delivered lectures to medical professionals across nearly every continent, establishing himself as an esteemed authority in topics such as cataracts, glaucoma, and refractive surgery, both nationally and internationally.
In 2017, Dr Khalil was elected as the President of the Egyptian Society for the Glaucomas (ESG), which is the first glaucoma society to be founded in the Middle East and Africa. Dr Khalil occupied this honorable title till 2023, to be one of the longest serving in this position. He is also an active Board Member and Treasurer in the Egyptian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Dr Khalil Eye Clinic receives patients literally from all corners of the globe.
