Intravitreal Injections

An intravitreal injection is a procedure to place a medication directly into the space in the back of the eye called the vitreous cavity, near the retina.

Intravitreal injections involve injection of medicine into the jelly called the vitreous, which is filling most of the eye ball. This is the most effective way of getting high concentrations of medicine into the eye. It is commonly used to treat retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, macular edema, and retinal vein occlusion.

Medications such as Lucentis, Eylea, antibiotics, or certain types of steroids can be injected directly into the eye to help patients maintain their vision and keep vision loss at a minimum. Some patients may see an improvement in their vision from these injections as well, depending on the condition being treated. Depending on each particular eye condition, Dr Khalil will decide what is most suitable and useful for a each case.

Intravitreal injections are especially effective in treating wet age-related macular degeneration, a previously untreatable disease, in which abnormal blood vessels grow underneath the retina. Often, multiple injections are required over the course of many months depending on the type and severity of retinal disease being treated. 

For the patient's maximum safety and comfort, intravitreal injections are given under strict sterile conditions in the surgical theatre. Administration is practically painless, as it is carried out using suitabe mild anesthesia, that are well tolerated by the patient. Dr Khalil will advise the use of certain eye drops and antibiotics after the procedure. If these instructions are followed, the risk of complications becomes very low.
